The BAF 1º/5º GAv Aviators train at EPA

The Squadron RUMBA based on Fortaleza trains Cadets Aviators at the Training Center EPA. Six BAF pioneering aviators are part of the group.

This week the EPA received some crew members from 1º/ 5º GAv of the Brazilian Air Force who had accomplished practical training on the Embraer 110 – Bandeirante aircraft Simulator. The squadron, that has as motto "To instruct for the Combat", received this year six aviators integrant from the first group of pilots women from the Air Force Academy.

The aviators group is pioneering in the Brazilian Military Aviation History, but the Cadets face the fact with much naturalness. According to Cadets Joyce the treatment is equal between them and the masculine aviators. "It is so good to know that we are the first aviators formed by the BAF, but as our treatment is equal to the others, we leave the question of the pioneerism”, guarantees the Cadet.

During the training on the Embraer 110 – Bandeirante Simulator, the colleagues group at AFA and now the 1º/5º Gav Cadets now had chance to fly together, side by side. "This experience is very interesting, we fly as sections and this is very interesting. The transport aviation provides these things, since in the majority of the training of the Academy we flied many times in different aircraft”, commemorates the Cadet Adriana.
When the subject is the training on flight simulators all is unanimous in relation the importance of the program. "Here on the Simulator we have the chance to train several adverse situations and this will certainty assist if necessary to skirt a problem in ours day-by-day", explains another 1º / 5º GAv aviator, Cadet Juliana.

The young aviator Camila also detaches that on the simulator, beyond the technician factor exists a constant exercise of the human factor. "The security flight also involves the human factor and here on the Simulator we live deeply also the simulated psychological pressure, that generally is consequence of the technician problem", says the Cadet Camila.

1º/5º GAv RUMBA Squadron history

The 5º GAv was reactivated by Regulation 310/GM3, accomplished on October 20, 1980 and on January 01, 1981, passing to be subordinated directly to the CATRE, transferring to 5º GAv the mission previously specified to the Instrcution Area Group (GIA), which exerted the mission to give the aerial instruction in the CATRE. Thus, they had been reactivated the First Squadron of the Fifth Group of Aviation (1º/5º GAv), equipped with aircraft Embraer C-95 Bandeirante, and as the Fifth Group of Aviation Squadron (2º/5º GAv), equipped initially with aircraft Embraer AT-26 Xavante.

In the beginning, beyond its basic mission forming pilots and crew members of flight bombers for the Brazilian Air Force, 5º GAv accomplished some secondary missions of clarification, patrols and bombing. The name "Rumba" appeared during the maneuvers accomplished in the beginning of its activities, when during the patrol missions pane had the possibility to force the emergency landing in the sea.

The Brazilan Navy scaled two corvettes that remained in the area and they kept a permanent radio contact with the airplanes. The used codes were "Flute" for the Christmas Tower Control and "Rumba" for the B-25, following themselves the number of the Airplane Commander. The corvettes were "Lobster" and "Siri".

The 1º/5º GAv emblem presents the expression "Êta cabra da peste", created around 1952 by the Second-Lieutenant Hugo Helium Corrêa de Barros, pertaining the 1951 group.

Its motto is "To instruct for the Combat"
